With a reputation as one of the top ten printmakers in the world, Virgilio “Pandy” Aviado has cemented his place as a leading figure in the realm of fine printmaking. Renowned for his exceptional skill and unwavering dedication to the craft, Aviado has not only worked alongside some of the most esteemed artists of his time but has also paved the way for younger generations to explore new techniques and processes within the art form.
Aviado’s artistic journey began under the tutelage of the esteemed Araceli Dans during a transformative summer art class he attended while still in high school. It was during this time that he was introduced to Manuel Rodriguez, a figure who would leave an indelible mark on his artistic sensibilities. Aviado continued to study under Rodriguez’s guidance, attending weekly lessons and furthering his education at the University of Sto. Tomas and the Philippine Women’s University, immersing himself in the teachings of the father of Philippine Contemporary Printmaking.
As his involvement in the art industry flourished, Aviado became a founding member of the Ateneo Art Gallery (AAG) Arts Club, a distinguished position bestowed upon him by Emmanuel Torres, the AAG Curator. This marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to promoting the arts and supporting the growth of aspiring artists.
In 1967, Aviado’s talent and dedication were met with resounding success when he held his first solo exhibition at the Luz Gallery. This pivotal moment in his career caught the attention of renowned art patron Fernando Zobel, who recognized Aviado’s immense potential and awarded him a study grant. Upon his return to the Philippines in 1976, Aviado became a staunch supporter of the print industry within his homeland. He played an instrumental role in the establishment and growth of the Printmakers Association of the Philippines, now known as the Philippine Association of Printmakers, a vibrant community initiated by Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. during the 1960s. Aviado’s presence in the printmaking industry has resulted in numerous prints, exhibitions, and accolades both domestically and internationally. His passion for printmaking and unwavering support for young artists remain steadfast, yet Aviado’s artistic endeavors extend far beyond the boundaries of printmaking. His prowess can be witnessed in his remarkable paintings, drawings, and mixed media works.

This accolade was presented to Aviado at the Ateneo de Manila University, further solidifying his status as a luminary in the art world.

The Graven Images: 1964-2014 exhibition at the Ayala Museum in 2014 further highlighted Aviado’s artistic evolution and his contributions to the art of printmaking.
