Artist’s Spotlight
Christian Regis
Painter
Christian Regis’s career in Philippine Art can be described in one word: Transcendence. He continuously and successfully brings us on a journey of local colors through time and space.
Every piece of art created by Christian Regis has the heart of the Filipino beating at its center. Initially known for his historical landmarks, streets, and edifices of Metropolitan Manila. He has since delved deeper into the spirit of the everyday Filipino through vibrant splashes of color. As a result, he takes us on an unexpected journey into the unfamiliarly familiar while simultaneously persuading us that life is always worthwhile, despite the challenges that it presents. It is not surprising that Regis is already preparing for another voyage, one that he intends to sail with us through another medium — Metal Sculptures.
Christian first began experimenting with abstract expressions after he had finished several works of art for a designer and had been commissioned by a gallery to display his paintings in a hotel. At the beginning of his career as an artist, he focused on painting still life and figurative surrealism. In all his previous works, he included a symbol in the form of a green apple on the canvas. He has also joined a number of art organizations throughout Metro Manila, and received a commission from Megaworld to create paintings for the lobby of one of their most prestigious buildings in Makati City.
Throughout the course of his career, Regis has refined his style, moving away from hasty swaths and toward an approach that is uniquely his own: an approach that is non-figurative abstraction. His style and subjects are universally accessible to generations of Filipinos both at home and abroad, capturing everything from the vibe of day-to-day Manila to the superstitions, beliefs, and faithfulness of the people who live there. After having several highly successful solo shows in Manila and the United States, he continuously contributes to and takes part in a variety of group exhibits and exhibitions held all over the city of Manila. After an art residency in Tuscany, Italy, he is currently preparing for a solo exhibition at Imahica Art Gallery in Mandaluyong City.
