Hermes Alegre
Painter
Hermes Alegre is a multi-awarded painter widely known for his mesmerizing portrayals of women. These paintings have been described as “portrait-like renditions of women with an uncanny sense of movement,” with the women themselves described as “seductive,” “alluring,” “erotic,” and “shrouded with a quiet sense of mystery.”
Without a doubt, Alegre’s women share the same esteem as their creator. These portraits continue to be highly prized by collectors both here and abroad. “I’m inspired by the beauty and behavior of the Pinay with their dusky features, pouty lips, and mystical smile,” Alegre once explained when asked about his favorite subject.
Despite this connection, many seem to be unaware of the fact that Alegre also dabbles in abstract art. His abstract painting, “Underglass”, which was included in Imahica Art’s inaugural show, Imagus: Rave of Art and Spaces is actually part of his personal collection.
Alegre’s abstract paintings remain to be as striking as his portraits of women and continue to showcase his preference for fanciful imagery. However, compared to his wide use of vibrant hues on his women portraits, Alegre seems a little bit more reserved in his palette selection when it comes to his abstract portraits, as seen on “Underglass”— a stunning piece of art that plays on themes of perspective and various ways to distort reality.
Aside from being an accomplished painter, Alegre has illustrated books for children as well. A collaborative work with National Artist Francisco Arcellana entitled The Mats, won the 1995 National Book Award for Children’s Literature.
With an artistic career spanning more than three decades, Alegre has participated in group exhibits in New York, Belgium, and Germany. He has held solo exhibits in Sweden and Singapore and his works have been regularly featured in ManilART, proving his place as an undeniable force in the Philippine contemporary art scene.
Interested parties who would like to learn more about Alegre’s abstract paintings can visit the Imahica, an art gallery featuring Philippine contemporary art. Imahica is located at Wack-Wack, Shaw Bvld., Mandaluyong City, near Greenhills, San Juan.
