Artist’s Spotlight
Maria Pureza Escaño
Throughout human history, the innate desire for a tranquil existence has lingered in the subconscious. In her sixth solo show, “The Secret Hour,” artist Maria Pureza Escaño unveils glimpses of her dreamworld, Everthere — a paradisiacal forest she passionately portrays through paint, brush, and clay, driven by a timeless yearning for a perfect state of being.
Born in Sariaya, Quezon, on February 2, 1970, Escaño’s artistic journey began at the age of 9, ignited by French Impressionism. While her early years focused on visual expression, her pursuit of a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at the Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation revealed a parallel passion for the written word, earning literary acclaim before completing her degree.
In 2009, Escaño’s extensive portfolio drew the attention of ICO Gallery in Tribeca, Manhattan, marking the start of a global artistic journey spanning major cities. Her art, characterized by mastery and epic quality, reflects universal realities and human aspirations, evident in pieces like “Aubade: Farewell to a Loved One” (2014) an installation sculpture which is currently being built in Berlin, Germany and “The Rose of Marya” (2010) which stands at the Freedom Park of UP – Los Banos as its Centennial Landmark.
“The Secret Hour: Glimpses of Everthere” represents the apex of Escaño’s artistic evolution, offering viewers a glimpse into her dreamworld, the mystical realm of Everthere. Through serene landscapes, tumbling waters, and vibrant flora and fauna, she shares her passionate depiction of a paradisiacal forest.
Beyond her artistic accomplishments, Escaño’s humanitarian spirit is evident. In 2010, she donated all 16 works from her “Ode to the Father” exhibition to seed funds for the Scholarship of Hope, a charity supporting the education of children from the poorest families.
