CYCLES: A Celebration of New Beginnings
Chasing Dreams, Challenging Fate, and Changing Destinies
Get ready for a fresh perspective on the Lunar Zodiac and the power of the “wormhole punk” style at Megs Empinado’s solo exhibition. This thought-provoking show, titled CYCLES, delves into the idea of cycles in various contexts, from the natural cycles of the seasons and the cycles of life, to the cyclical nature of emotions and transformation.
Empinado, a digital artist and animator with an impressive list of credits including Marvel, DC, Capcom, and Hasbro, has ventured into the realm of traditional media to push his own artistic boundaries and explore new techniques. His goal is to merge digital and analog techniques to create equal opportunities for all artists and discover untapped talent.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this exhibit is the use of “wormhole punk” to tell a story based on the lunar zodiac, which consists of twelve animals each associated with a specific character trait. This show offers an in-depth look at the cultural norms and cyclical processes that shape our world, as well as the potential influence of the lunar zodiac on our understanding of technological advancements.
At CYCLES, Empinado uses the aesthetics of punk and the concept of wormholes – theoretical portals through space-time – to investigate the potential consequences of interstellar travel on individuals and communities. This subgenre of cyberpunk, known as “wormhole punk,” offers a unique blend of high-tech and fantastical elements that pushes the boundaries of the genre.
In this exhibition, Empinado also presents his own interpretation of the foo dog, a traditional symbol of bravery and strength from the Lunar Zodiac. These paired creatures are often placed at the front doors of buildings as a form of protection and good luck.
CYCLES will be on view at the Imahica Art Gallery in Wack-Wack, Mandaluyong City, Philippines from January 14th to February 4th, 2023.
