Pancho Piano
Pancho Piano (b. 1954) stands as a prominent figure in the vibrant art scene of Bicolandia. Hailing from the tranquil town of Lagonoy in Camarines Sur, he has not only left an indelible mark on the regional art landscape but has also proudly represented the Philippines in numerous national and international art exhibitions. His canvas is a testament to his exceptional talent, characterized by richly textured masterpieces that vividly portray the essence of Bicolandia’s fiestas and the ever-majestic Mayon volcano.
He effortlessly transitions between the realms of realistic oil paintings, such as his beloved Daragang Magayon series, and the fluidity of abstract art, all while maintaining a remarkable level of skill and grace. Piano’s stained glass creations, in particular, stand out as a testament to his awe-inspiring versatility. His artistic prowess extends beyond the confines of traditional painting, encompassing leatherworks, sculptures, and more.
Pancho’s journey as an artist was deeply intertwined with his humble beginnings. As a young artist, he harnessed his burgeoning talent to sustain his education and support his six younger siblings. Initially pursuing a degree in Economics at the University of Nueva Caceres in Naga City (1978), Pancho’s destiny took a dramatic turn when his remarkable talent in illustration art caught the attention of the late Jose Joya, a renowned abstractionist and art educator. By 1984, Pancho Piano was recommended as a scholar to the prestigious University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, Diliman, Quezon City.
Since 1986, Pancho Piano has completed an astounding 150 mural paintings and stained glass designs. The majority of his patrons hail from Catholic parishes and municipal governments across Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Catanduanes, and Metro Manila. Notable installations include stained glass windows in the Peñafrancia’s adoration chapel and main basilica, as well as various churches and residences across Bicolandia and Metro Manila. These masterpieces hold a special place in the hearts of Bicolanos worldwide.
In essence, Pancho Piano is undeniably one of the cornerstones of contemporary Bicol arts and culture. His artistic journey, from humble beginnings in Lagonoy to international recognition, is a testament to the enduring power of creativity and dedication. Pancho’s work continues to inspire and enrich the cultural tapestry of Bicolandia and the Philippines as a whole.
