Artist’s Spotlight
Julius Clar
Julius S. Clar hails from the rural regions of the Philippines, specifically the southern area, where he spent his formative years. He pursued higher education in the bustling city of Manila, where his artistic journey took shape. Following his college years, he ventured into the world of photography and print media design and production. This professional background deeply influenced his artistic evolution, especially in the realms of collage, assemblage, and mixed media art.
Clar’s body of work reflects a profound connection between his provincial upbringing and his unwavering commitment to simplicity and unadulterated honesty. These core values converged with the conceptual underpinnings of the 1960s minimalist art movement, resulting in a unique fusion of rural temperament with minimalist ideals. His artistic output is characterized by spare and contemplative artworks that traverse a seemingly desolate path, often infused with a delicate melancholy that is ultimately transcended by an uplifting sense of near-bliss.
In many of his creative endeavors, the empty spaces within his compositions, whether rendered in white or any other color, assume a pivotal role. These vacant spaces serve as invisible supports, propelling the primary color motifs to assume their roles within the intricate tapestry of his paintings.
Julius Clar‘s artistic contributions have transcended international borders, with his works being cherished by collectors in various parts of the world, including the United States, Canada, Brunei, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. His creations have found their place in prestigious venues such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Silver Lens Gallery, the Art Center Mega Mall, the Ayala Museum, the Lopez Memorial Museum, and many other significant locations within the global art community.
