Stunning, sprawling, and spellbinding, “La Moderna Filipina 2022” is Imahica’s annual art exhibit celebrating generations of women who have come to shape Philippine contemporary art. Coinciding with the observation of Women’s Month, this year’s exhibition gathers thirty-one Filipina artists whose variegated works showcase the dynamism of Philippine women in our time.
Headlined by the matriarchs of modern women’s art in the country, the exhibition presents a long view of the preoccupations of female artists, one that is bookended by new creatives. Among the key artists included are Ninj-Reyes Abay, Agnes Arellano, Flor Baradi, Rax Bautista, Kathleen Dagum, Jane Ebarle, Jade Fulgar, Irish Galon, Julie Lluch, Gabi Nazareno, Julieanne Ng, Katti Sta. Ana, Lhean Storm, Beatrix Syjuco, Jean Syjuco, Maxine Syjuco, Pat Tañedo, Valen Valero, the members of WAPAK Collective, Ev Yu, and Phyllis Zaballero.
The established and emerging names in the show convey national variety too, representing the three major island formations from Luzon to Visayas, all the way to Mindanao, and beyond.
The materials of choice display extraordinary range, signifying not one, but many modes of artistic panache: acrylic, print, fabric, watercolor, mixed media, found object, plaster, transmedia, photography, sculpture, ceramic, and terra cotta.
Even more interesting, these individuals lead other lives, denoting the empowered choices for women and the diversity of spaces that they occupy today. Artists above all, they are also writers, jewelers, teachers, economists, leaders, and parents.
Such richness of lives can be gleaned from the styles of their works—from mythological to domestic, personal to political, sculptural to conceptual, and figurative to abstract.
The artworks in this show are for all seasons and persuasions. They have come, are here to stay: women’s time, women’s art.
The show will run from 19 March until 10 May 2022. For more information, please contact contact Imahica Art at (+63) 917 894 5646 or (+63) 2 7622 4008 or email thegallery@Imahica.art.
