1 Woman: Here and There

Feb 18 to Mar 4, 2023
1 Woman: Here and There

A Solo Show by Ovvian Castrillo–Hill

This journey is one woman’s transcendence from her many identities. This is one woman making a difference.

Ovvian Castrillo-Hill has shattered the glass ceiling, demonstrating to the world that a single woman has the power to change the status quo and surpass societal expectations. 1Woman is a powerful exhibition that delves into Ovvian’s strength and resilience in her nomadic existence. Her work reflects the constant flux of two countries and the complexities of living a life of different roles, providing us a glimpse into the artist’s own life and the experiences that have shaped her worldview.

This solo showcase brings to life the nuanced struggles of straddling between cultures through masterful creations. Her techniques amplify the intention of conveying the narrative of a dynamic individual – a woman in constant motion – with an intention to empower people going through the same movements. The brass and wood that render warmth and familiarity is complemented by the unfamiliar coldness embodied by the stainless steel, the imagery of a fluid dancing figure abstracted in rigid shapes, and the swift bold lines that suddenly come to a slow gentle curve. These contrasting concepts are seen throughout Ovvian’s works reflecting the duality of existence and human nature in a state of flux.

Each of Ovvian’s works tells a story, like a thread woven through the artist’s soul and the rich tapestry of Filipino culture. Ultimately, they pay tribute to the multifaceted nature of womanhood, depicting the strength and tenacity of the warrior woman. Castrillo-Hill’s personal experiences and cultural understanding are seamlessly intertwined, here and there, creating works of art that are both beautiful and meaningful.
