Artist’s Spotlight

Fernando Sena

Painter

“With each stroke of his brush, Sena weaves a tapestry that connects the ethereal realms of art with the beating hearts of the masses, evoking the profound potential of creativity to ignite transformation and shape destinies.”

Fernando Sena

Renowned as the “sublime poor man’s painter,” Fernando Sena stands as a testament to the power of art to illuminate the struggles and triumphs of ordinary Filipinos. His vivid and heartfelt depictions of religious icons, pan de sal, humble barong-barongs, piles of assorted toys, destitute individuals, and scenes of simple everyday life have captured the hearts and minds of audiences across the nation. With his pan de sal series, Sena has immortalized the lowly bread of the common tao, creating the largest body of work dedicated to this symbol of resilience on canvas.

Born from humble beginnings, Sena’s choice of subjects reflects not only his personal experiences but also his passionate advocacy for shedding light on the plight of the impoverished. His artistic contributions extend far beyond the aesthetic impact of his vast collection, spanning an illustrious 47-year career. Through countless workshops conducted mostly free of charge, Sena has not only planted the seed of art within the consciousness of numerous Filipinos from all walks of life but has also empowered them to create art and share their knowledge.

No other artist has managed to reach as wide an audience as Mr. Sena. Garnering the title of the “Father of Philippine Art Workshops,” he has graced the airwaves of numerous radio and television shows since the late 1970s. With the advent of social media, Sena has effortlessly transitioned into the digital realm, appearing in instructional YouTube videos, captivating audiences on Facebook, and sharing his insights through thought-provoking blogs. In 2015 and 2016, he took his teachings a step further by publishing two instructional books on drawing and painting, cementing his role as a mentor and educator.

Sena’s impact extends beyond personal recognition and artistic accolades. He has established several art groups that align with his advocacy, such as KATAG, Dalusapi, and the Buenas Artes Artist Group. His Art Discovery and Learning Foundation, Inc. has generously provided support to 11 scholars pursuing their studies at the prestigious University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts. Among this exceptional group, six have already graduated, with three graduating cum laude. As an advisor to the PPA (Preserving Philippine Art) organization, Sena has guided its endeavors since its incorporation under the Securities and Exchange Commission, alongside his esteemed colleague, Fil Delacruz.

No living visual artist has left such an indelible mark on the Filipino nation as Fernando B. Sena. During the ASEAN Visual Arts and Education First Symposium and Workshop in November 1994, the Philippine panel singled out Sena’s free workshops as the model for “Community-based, Non-Formal Art Education.” Recognizing the pivotal role of art education in shaping the minds of the youth and fostering the development of a nation’s culture, Carmen D. Padilla, then Commissioner and Executive Director of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, emphasized the significance of Sena’s contributions.

Described by Alice Guillermo, the late art historian and critic, as “the most consistent, devoted, and longest-lasting art teacher in the country today,” Fernando Sena’s life’s mission has been to awaken the artistic spirit within hundreds of children and adults for several decades. Since the early 1970s, teaching art has consumed his waking hours, solidifying his commitment to the enrichment of society through creative expression.

Today, Fernando Sena continues to paint, imparting his wisdom and passion to eager learners, further cementing his singular distinction as an artist and teacher. His unwavering dedication to art education in the Philippines and his relentless pursuit of nurturing the Filipino soul and culture have indelibly shaped the artistic landscape of the nation. Through his artistry and mentorship, Sena has contributed to the molding of young minds and the development of a thriving artistic community.

Sena’s artworks embody the essence of the Filipino spirit, capturing the beauty found in the ordinary and the resilience of the marginalized. His paintings invite viewers to pause and reflect on their own struggles, urging them to face each day with a clear and brave heart, just as the ordinary Filipino does in their relentless pursuit of survival. Through his brushstrokes, Sena bridges the gap between the art world and the common people, reminding us of the power of art to inspire and bring about change.

Beyond his artistic endeavors, Sena’s impact on society extends to his role as a mentor and guide. His workshops have become a haven for budding artists, providing a nurturing environment where creativity can flourish. By sharing his techniques, knowledge, and passion, Sena has empowered countless individuals to discover their artistic potential, regardless of their background or socio-economic status.

The mark of Sena’s influence can be seen not only in the countless artworks created by his students but also in the lasting impact they have on their own communities. Inspired by Sena’s example, many of his protégés have gone on to become influential figures in the art world, fostering their own artistic communities and sharing their skills with others. Sena’s legacy lives on through these dedicated individuals who continue to carry the torch of his teachings.

Throughout his illustrious career, Sena has received numerous accolades and recognition for his contributions to the arts. His works have been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums both locally and internationally, earning him a devoted following of art enthusiasts and collectors. However, it is the impact he has made on the lives of everyday Filipinos that truly defines his legacy.

Fernando Sena’s journey as an artist and art educator is a testament to the power of art to transform lives and build bridges between diverse communities. With each stroke of his brush and every lesson he imparts, he inspires others to discover the beauty in their own surroundings, fostering a deep appreciation for the culture and soul of the Filipino nation.

As Fernando Sena continues to paint and teach, his unwavering dedication to the arts and his commitment to uplifting the Filipino spirit remain unwavering. His journey is a testament to the transformative power of art and a reminder that each individual has the capacity to create change, one brushstroke at a time.
