ROTE

Raphael Reyes (ROTE)

Raphael Reyes’ fascination with storytelling is profoundly evident in his current subjects and the narrative woven into his works. These are heavily influenced by the various forms of literary works he has deeply engaged with since childhood. His love for music also plays a crucial role in his creative process, often driving the mood and ambiance of his paintings. Sometimes, a single line from a song or the history of a particular musician or artist he listens to can inspire his work.

Since 2021, when he embarked on his artistic journey, he has been dedicated to passing along the tradition and style of comic art with his unique touch. His style is unmistakably influenced by the era of atomic illustration and ‘ligne claire,’ with notable inspirations including artists like Hegré, Giraud, and Swarte. His current works primarily depict his original characters, Waro and Emma. The interplay between these characters, whether in mundane experiences or perilous adventures, invites viewers to delve into and contemplate the narratives within his artworks.

He has showcased his art in various exhibitions, including Nuzen Art Gallery in June 2023, Arte Pintura Manila’s “Unlikely Heroes” in November 2023, and their Year-End Show in December 2023. His work was also featured at Kuta Art Space’s Year-End Show in December 2023 and the Xavier Art Festival under Arte Pintura Manila. In 2023, he exhibited at 22nd 5th Gallery in “The Unveiling” in January and “Chasing Utopia” in March, as well as at Art in the Park under Space Encounters Gallery and QUBE Gallery in March.
