Nova Lucernas
Nova Lucernas is a full-time visual artist from Danao Cebu with a background in fine art. She finished her studies in Fine Arts Majoring in Painting at University of San Carlos. She has held one Solo Show in 2016 as well as a two-woman show in 2018. Nova has participated in numerous group and online exhibitions in Cebu, Calbayog, Manila, Vietnam and Malaysia. Nova’s work specializes in assemblage, and mixed media art. Her art is greatly inspired by her childhood; hearing stories about myths and beliefs that are now often dismissed as being superstitious (tuo-tuo) has greatly influenced her to pursue her art practice.
Nova’s exploration of mixed media and materials allows her to express and present new ideas and at the same time educate and connect with the viewers so that what was “not progressed” in Philippine culture can be developed now. Immersing herself in various cultures while working in constant recognition of her own, Nova continues to gain relevant experiences and new friends across countries. She says that it is through traveling that she draws inspiration to “upgrade” her art.
She also gained couple of awards such as Grand Prize in Espina Art Competition, Best in New Media (Gold) for the 5th Cristobal Espina Art Awards, Two time finalist in Espina Art Competition. Because of her experience in Malaysia, Vietnam, and joining local group exhibitions online she is now motivated to make some changes in her work, learning to develop a more intricate art style and exploring different mediums.
