Michi Calica
Michi Calica, an abstract artist deeply rooted in the fashion industry, boasts a storied career as a fashion designer spanning over 15 years, renowned for her romantic wedding gowns. Following a thyroid cancer diagnosis in 2021 and subsequent surgery, which temporarily robbed her of her voice for a year, Michi turned to art as a means of expression. Immersed in intuitive and non-figurative art, painting became her voice when words failed.
Although she has regained her voice, Michi chooses silence on painting days, believing it preserves the purity of the creative process. Awarded a full scholarship at the Art Institute of Seattle under the Carolina Herrera International Scholarship (1993 to 1994), Michi received a Citation Award at the Louvre, Paris, for the Jeunes Createurs de Mode (Air France Young Designer Competition).
Scheduled for her first one-woman show in June 2024 and her second solo show in November 2024, Michi currently works as a full-time artist at Balai Ka-likha, a seaside art studio in Real, Quezon. Painting from 3:00 AM to sundown, she draws inspiration from the symphony of nature, slow cooking, and the overall energy of serenity.
