Artist’s Spotlight
Binong Javier
Visual Artist
An essential truth about visual artist Binong Javier’s work can be gleaned from an appreciation of his personal history. Drop by painstaking drop, the artist creates what looks like a cohesive explosion of color, but is actually a mapping of a constellation of experiences in which the artist highlights both the uniqueness of each moment and its significance in the greater whole.
Javier, who was born and raised in Caloocan City, has always had a passion for creative expression and decided to pursue a degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in advertising. Javier began painting more frequently and seriously in college, entering a number of contests both inside and outside of the university. Javier finished school and spent some time painting murals before leaving the country. His life was an adventure in music, photography, and technology. He clearly loves the arts, as evidenced by his years working as a graphic designer in other countries. Javier, who had gained a more global perspective during his time abroad, entered the Non-Representational category of the 2016 GSIS National Art Competition.
The path he took to become a visual artist was anything but linear. Actually, he never deliberately decided to change course. By chance or providence, during his time off he discovered the visual arts again and fell in love with them. More than anything, he wants to believe that it’s a calling. He has always believed that the most fulfilling work comes from following one’s passion, be it in the visual arts, music, or any other field.Javier has complete control over the trajectory of his drops, whether he wants them to travel inwards, outwards, in waves, or any other pattern he can imagine. However, Javier can convey his concept of visualizing a person through their unique experiences in any way he sees fit.
