Joey Cobcobo
Born in 1983, Joey Cobcobo graduated Cum Laude with a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, major in Advertising from the Technological University of the Philippines. Born a half-Igorot and half-Ilocano currently residing in Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City since 1986, his ethnicity has become a central influence in his practice. This is especially evident in his LOLA Project, which explores subjects and themes related to his heritage.
Cobcobo’s artworks are mainly with print media, combining the techniques of painting, printmaking, and woodcarving to create multi-method assemblages and installation works.
Due to his expertise, he has been given several awards and distinctions throughout his career, among which include the: Grand Prize Winner for the ArtPetron Painting Competitions in 2002; Grand Prize winner of the National Piñana Art on handmade paper in 2003; Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Thirteen Artists Awards in 2012; an artist residency at Koganecho Bazaar, Grand: Ojisan/Obasan, in Yokohama, Japan in 2013; finalist for the 2nd ASEAN Graphic Art Competition and Exhibition held in Vietnam last 2016; winner for the Ateneo Art Gallery Marciano Galag Acquisition Prize Works on Paper exhibition in 2020 for his COVID-19 pandemic piece “Bangungot,” and; winner of Singapore Tyler Print Institute’s (STPI) international print competition for his entry “Propaganda and Plataporma.” He was also shortlisted for the Ateneo Art Awards in 2013, 2010, and 2009, and was given the Juror’s Choice of Excellency in those same years at the Philippine Art Awards.
Cobcobo is a member of the Association of Pinoyprintmakers (AP) and has served as its Secretary.
He has mounted solo exhibitions in Avellana Art Gallery, Bencab Museum, West Gallery, Art Verite, Pinto Art Museum, Ortigas Foundation Library, plus a commissioned exhibit in 2015 at the Lopez Museum for Propaganda, Tahanang Walang Hagdan. Selected group exhibitions include those held at Hangaram Art Museum in Seoul South Korea, Fine Arts Museum in Saigon Vietnam, Philippine Center in New York City, USA, Singapore and Australia. His winning international entry “Propaganda and Plataporma” was also selected for a virtual mounted exhibition from May to June by STPI.
