Partitions Lead to Motions
A deconstructive approach in creating a non-moving image helps examine the dynamics of certain forms by leading the gaze of the viewer to follow a sequence and imagine the motion. Such approach can be seen in two forms through a painting by Ev Yu and a sculpture by Valen Valero. The watercolour painting “Faulty Sequence” gives an aesthetic like of puzzle pieces minus the negative-positive edges when actually it is more of an animation sequence set of frames on an invisible grid. The sculpture “Coming to the Wholeness” uses flat parts of the circle juxtaposing on different profiles as it follows a single radius, while it seems to lead vertically at the same time. From these two sets of works offering different dimensions, the experience of movement was made possible without employing kinetic mechanisms in its structure.
