Artist’s Spotlight
Jao Mapa
Before gaining recognition for his vivid depictions of Filipino life on canvas, Jao Mapa was a familiar face in Philippine entertainment.

Even at the height of his acting career, Jao was quietly drawn to a different form of expression: art. In the early 2000s, he made the deliberate decision to step away from the screen and pursue Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas. What began as casual sketching developed into a serious painting practice that continues to evolve today.
Jao’s artworks celebrate the everyday. Street vendors, family dinners, religious processions, and neighborhood memories are all brought to life with warmth, bold color, and expressive form. He works primarily in acrylic on canvas, a medium he values for its flexibility and immediacy. His style is rooted in storytelling and emotion, drawing heavily from his own experiences growing up in Manila and his keen observation of Filipino culture.
Outside his studio practice, Jao also teaches art at an international school in Makati. He encourages students to explore identity and meaning through creative expression. At home, he is a dedicated husband and father of three, and he continues to accept acting roles that speak to him personally.
Jao Mapa’s journey from matinee idol to visual artist is a story of courage, reinvention, and staying true to one’s creative roots. Whether on screen or on canvas, his work continues to reflect the warmth, spirit, and depth of the Filipino experience.
