Kent Castillo
John Kent Salazar Castillo is a Grade 10 student at Blessed Luisa School in Parañaque. Born into a family of painters, he was exposed to the world of art from an early age. His grandfather, Nelson Castillo, is known as the “Father of Miniature Painting” in the Philippines. His father, Janddie Castillo, is recognized for his distinctive “Splash Art of Wisik,” while his mother, Maricris Salazar Castillo, is known for her impressionist paintings of flowers, gardens, and landscapes.
Kent Castillo is a pioneer member of the Visual Artists of Parañaque (VAP) and also participates in other local art groups. From a young age, he often accompanied his father during painting sessions, observing and learning as they spent time creating together. His father would share art materials with him, encouraging him to explore and express himself through painting. These early experiences became meaningful moments of bonding and served as a foundation for John Kent’s development as an artist. Over time, he discovered his own artistic voice, gravitating toward abstract painting using acrylic as his primary medium. He draws inspiration from history, believing that the past shapes the present, and that we, as individuals, reflect the stories of today. Listening to his parents’ and grandparents’ experiences has helped him understand the value of joy and sincerity in creating art.
Kent continues to explore and refine his personal style while actively joining group exhibitions. With the support of his family, especially his father, he remains focused on growing as a young artist and developing his own identity in the art world.
