Juno Galang

Juno Galang

Juno Galang, born in Manila in 1942, discovered his passion for art at a young age. He studied Fine Arts, majoring in Advertising, at the University of Santo Tomas. Despite his academic training, Galang considers himself largely self-taught his skills honed through observation and countless visits to the art galleries of Mabini and Malate, where he closely studied the techniques of local masters.

He began his career as an illustrator and graphic artist in advertising agencies before migrating to the United States in the 1960s. In San Francisco, he worked as an illustrator for a department store’s in-house art division. Over time, he transitioned into freelance illustration, which led him to work across major cities including New York City, Seattle, and Vancouver.

After more than two decades as a freelance artist, Galang relocated to Hawaii, where he fulfilled his lifelong dream of painting full time. His work during this period captured the vibrant culture, traditions, and people of the islands marked by expressive forms and bold color palettes. These early paintings were influenced by artists such as Van Gogh, Picasso, and Gauguin, with animated figures set against vivid hues.

Never content to remain static, Galang continued to evolve artistically. He moved from early expressive styles toward hyperrealism, often featuring precise, detailed subjects rendered against a profusion of vibrant colors. His goal has always been to evoke emotion through his work to uplift, inspire, and leave viewers with a sense of warmth and connection.

Now at 82, Galang remains as prolific and passionate as ever. In recent years, he has returned to the Philippines and begun exploring themes rooted in his heritage. His current body of work focuses on everyday life local scenes and ordinary people such as street vendors, fishermen, farmers, and frontliners whom he considers the true heroes of society. These works mark a shift from the hyperrealist approach of his Hawaii period toward a more contemporary impressionist style.

Through each stage of his career, Juno Galang has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to craft, storytelling, and emotional authenticity. His art continues to celebrate humanity, culture, and the beauty found in everyday life.
