Remy Boquiren
Remy Boquiren’s artistic journey is a testament to resilience, faith, and the transformative power of creativity. Born in Surigao del Norte province in 1940, Remy’s early years were marked by challenges, including the absence of her father and limited resources for pursuing her passion for art. However, her indomitable spirit and innate talent paved the way for a remarkable artistic odyssey that would span decades.
Remy’s formal artistic education began at the University of Santo Tomas (U.S.T.) in the early 1960s, where she experienced a profound awakening to the world of shapes, colors, and forms under the mentorship of esteemed art faculty members, including National Artists Victorio Edades, Diosdado Lorenzo, Galo Ocampo, and Napoleon Abueva. Recognizing her raw talent, these mentors nurtured Remy’s artistic potential, instilling in her a drive for excellence that would shape her future endeavors.
Following her graduation in 1964, Remy embarked on a multifaceted career that encompassed roles as an art editor, advertising professional, and art instructor. Despite the demands of her burgeoning family life—marrying her partner Rizal Conception and raising their three children—Remy remained steadfast in her commitment to her artistic calling.
In 1976, Remy made the courageous decision to pursue her passion for art full-time, resigning from her teaching position to focus on painting. Her bold leap of faith was rewarded with a series of successful solo exhibitions that garnered critical acclaim and captured the attention of art enthusiasts and patrons alike. Notably, her second solo exhibition in 1976, “The Way We Wear,” proved to be a breakthrough moment, drawing the patronage of art connoisseurs, including former First Lady Imelda Marcos.
