Jes Evangelista
Jes Evangelista completed his Fine Arts degree in 2002, and his artworks have been showcased extensively in the Philippines, Germany, and across the United States, spanning from California and Washington in the West to New York and New Jersey in the East.
In 2007, he achieved the grand prize at the Second Semi-Annual Abstract Art Competition held by the Art Association of the Philippines. He was also recognized as a finalist in the 1st Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Art Competition (2011) and the Shell National Arts Competition (1989 & 1992).
Evangelista’s paintings are characterized by a fusion of vibrant hues, employing lines, rectilinear structures, and jigsaw puzzle-like shapes and forms. Utilizing mixed media, including various paints and cut-out materials, he creates a unique interplay of layered lines and colors, symbolizing evolving personalities, the layering of traits, and experiences that overlap, obliterate, and replace one another. Apart from painting, Evangelista teaches art workshops and curates or organizes projects and exhibitions for his work and that of his fellow artists.
Ruben D.F. Defeo, a curator from Evangelista’s 7th Solo Show in 2014 at NCCA Gallery, Intramuros Manila, expressed, “The desire to fully grasp the prospects of his materials has driven Evangelista to all but exhaust it, from beginning to end, employing a surplus of constructive, destructive, deconstructive, reconstructive, and reversive modes/perspectives to employ. Everything becomes material to his art. There neither leftovers nor spillovers.”
