Pancho Piano, born in 1954 and hailing from the serene town of Lagonoy in Camarines Sur, has emerged as a prominent figure within the vibrant art scene of Bicolandia. His influence extends beyond regional boundaries, as he proudly represents the Philippines in numerous national and international art exhibitions. Pancho’s canvas serves as a profound testament to his exceptional artistic prowess, marked by richly textured masterpieces that vividly capture the essence of Bicolandia’s lively fiestas and the awe-inspiring presence of the Mayon volcano. He effortlessly transitions between the realms of realistic oil paintings, exemplified by his beloved Daragang Magayon series, and the fluidity of abstract art, all the while maintaining a remarkable level of skill and grace. Pancho’s versatility shines through in his stained glass creations, and his artistic endeavors transcend conventional boundaries, encompassing leatherworks, sculptures, and more.

As a young artist, he harnessed his burgeoning talent to sustain his education and support his six younger siblings. Originally pursuing a degree in Economics at the University of Nueva Caceres in Naga City in 1978, Pancho’s life took a dramatic turn when his remarkable talent in illustration art caught the attention of the late Jose Joya, a renowned abstractionist and art educator. In 1984, Pancho Piano was recommended as a scholar to the prestigious University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, Diliman, Quezon City. Since 1986, he has completed an astonishing 150 mural paintings and stained glass designs, primarily commissioned by Catholic parishes and municipal governments across Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Catanduanes, and Metro Manila. Noteworthy installations include stained glass windows in the Peñafrancia’s adoration chapel and main basilica, along with various churches and residences across Bicolandia and Metro Manila. These masterpieces hold a special place in the hearts of Bicolanos around the world. In essence, Pancho Piano is an undeniable cornerstone of contemporary Bicol arts and culture, with his journey from humble beginnings in Lagonoy to international recognition serving as a testament to the enduring power of creativity and dedication.
