1 Woman: Navigating Transience and Displacement
“1Woman: Here & There” is a solo sculptural exhibition that explores the theme of transience and displacement through the personal experiences of the artist, Ovvian Castrillo-Hill. The exhibit presents an enlightening journey of the artist’s experiences of splitting their time between two countries, and the unique perspectives gained from constantly shifting between cultures. It also highlights the emotional depth and complexity that come with never fully feeling at home in one place. The sculptures on display reflect the artist’s courage and ability to overcome adversity. Her paintings are every bit as captivating as her sculptures, showcasing the same level of technical brilliance and poignant expression. This exhibition provides a unique insight into the human condition and the complexities of navigating a transient lifestyle.
The show centers around the artist being in many places at once, being different people at once — a mother, wife, daughter, artist, woman, cultural worker, writer, advocate for humanities, a minority living in a foreign land, filmmaker, composer, curator, and art consultant. Through her works and her story, she wishes to inspire other people, especially women.
The exhibition utilizes cut and welded brass and stainless steel bas-relief, reflecting Castrillo-Hill’s duality as an artist and individual. The brass embodies warmth and familiarity, while the stainless steel embodies cold unfamiliarity. Ovvian’s method of cutting and welding the materials together evokes a sense of tension and conflict, further emphasizing the theme of her work.
The bas-relief technique used adds depth and dimension to her sculptures, creating a sense of movement and fluidity. The use of negative space in her works also adds to the sense of displacement and longing for a sense of belonging. Through her works, Ovvian invites viewers to explore the complexities of identity and the human experience of feeling torn between two worlds.
Like a bird soaring through the skies, Castrillo-Hill’s art takes us on a journey through her experiences as a transient. Her art serves as a reminder that we are all constantly on the move, searching for a sense of belonging. Ovvian Castrillo-Hill’s ‘1Woman: Here & There’ is an exhibition not to be missed, a celebration of the human spirit and the resilience of the human experience.
Ovvian Castrillo-Hill is the artist behind the iconic ‘PATH TO PROSPERITY’ at the Philippine Stock Exchange Building unveiled in 2018 and daughter of legendary sculptor Eduardo Castrillo who is most famously known for the Edsa Memorial Monument.
